Lyon College School of Veterinary Medicine FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of becoming a clinical affiliate?

Hosting students on clinical rotations comes with many benefits. In addition to the opportunity to mentor and influence future veterinarians, students bring fresh perspectives and enthusiasm that can energize and support the veterinary team. By becoming a clinical affiliate, you’ll gain access to continuing education opportunities and become part of a professional network connected to the university and faculty. Network with senior veterinary students as they become familiar with your clinic and consider future employment opportunities.

What is a Professor of Practice?

Professors of Practice are practicing veterinarians and clinical educators who mentor and instruct veterinary students in clinical settings. They draw on their vast experience as skilled communicators and public educators to prepare veterinary students for successful careers in service.

What are the expectations of Clinical Affiliates?

Professors of Practice, in collaboration with other veterinary team members, will provide students with consistent feedback and assessment on all course learning objectives. Feedback may be delivered in verbal and written forms. Professors of Practice will document and communicate any student issues with performance or professionalism to a member of the LCSVM Clinical Relations Team.

What are the expectations of clinical students?

Before their clinical year, senior veterinary students will have completed multiple client communication trainings and simulations, performed thorough patient history collection and physical examination, developed and executed anesthetic protocols, performed spay/neuter and dental procedures, and performed diagnostic testing and interpretations. Students’ abilities and skills will depend on their unique experiences and individual progress; however, their foundation from a vigorous preclinical curriculum and clinical skills training will prepare them to be an integral part of the veterinary team. Over the clinical year, students are expected to advance from novice to proficient in their case management and clinical skills.

What clinical resources will students need during rotations?

In addition to mentorship and guidance over clinical cases, students need ready access to the internet and supervised access to the electronic medical record system used in the practice. They also need a dedicated space to complete assignments, medical records, and readings. At the beginning of each rotation, students must participate in clinic orientation and complete a learning agreement outlining their personal goals.

Arrangements will be made in advance for any student who may need additional accommodations.

What are the considerations regarding professional liability and health insurance?

  • Lyon College will maintain $1,000,000 in professional liability insurance for all veterinary students.
  • Lyon College will maintain comprehensive or commercial general liability insurance with a limit of $2,000,000.
  • In addition, each clinical affiliate practice should provide a certificate of insurance verifying that it maintains commercial general liability insurance.
  • Lyon College strongly recommends that all students maintain continuous coverage of comprehensive health and accident insurance during the professional program.
