Student Services
The Lyon College School of Veterinary Medicine is committed to supporting its students throughout their educational journey. The school will offer a range of comprehensive student services designed to ensure both academic success and personal well-being.
Students will have access to academic advising, where dedicated faculty and staff help guide them through the rigors of veterinary education. Advisors will assist with course selection, career planning, and professional development, ensuring that students stay on track to meet their educational and career goals.
Mental health and wellness resources will also be available to help students manage the demands of the program. The challenges of veterinary school can be intense, and Lyon College is committed to providing counseling services, stress management resources, and peer support networks to promote a healthy work-life balance.
Additionally, career services will be offered to students throughout their studies, from helping them secure internships and clinical placements to providing job search assistance and networking opportunities as they approach graduation. The career services team will also work closely with students to develop their professional skills and connect them with potential employers in various veterinary specialties.
In addition to academic and career services, the Lyon College School of Veterinary Medicine will offer a student-centered environment with opportunities for leadership, community engagement, and extracurricular involvement. Students will have the chance to participate in outreach programs, student organizations, and service-learning projects, all of which will enhance their educational experience and help them develop into well-rounded professionals.
Academic Advising and Career Planning
The primary function of academic advising and career planning at LCSVM is to support students in both achieving academic success and setting appropriate academic and professional goals in a manner that fully considers students’ individual circumstances, interests, aptitudes, and abilities.
Academic Support Services/Academic Counseling Referrals
LCSVM will offer academic support services designed to enhance learning and aid in the success of all students. Academic support services will include one-on-one individual consultation, large and small group presentations, and peer tutoring training. An intended wellness initiative operated from the office of the ADPP will be provision of opportunities for students to participate in regular programs including, but not limited to guest speakers, seminars, physical activities, social activities, financial workshops, resume/interview writing workshops, etc. Wellness activities will also be planned, such as inclusion of support animals during stressful final examinations, etc.
Mental Health Counseling Services
Mental Health Counseling Services are considered essential for LCSVM students. Students will have access to confidential mental health counseling and care 24/7/365 through in person and/or virtual visits. This plan ensures that all students have equitable access to counseling services regardless of their physical location. The LCSVM aspires to foster an environment where students and employees are comfortable asking for help before issues become crises, while also providing students with multiple options to pursue assistance that maintain confidentiality. The faculty will contribute to this philosophy and complete training on how to support wellness throughout the LCSVM and how to respond in health crises. During orientation and in the student handbook, students will be informed about these services and how to access them.
Educational Accommodations
The LCSVM will be committed to providing accessible educational support services that will enable students with disabilities to participate in, and benefit from, all LCSVM programs and activities. As such, every effort will be made to reasonably accommodate the needs of a student with disabilities.
Financial Aid
The LCSVM will have a designated financial aid office that assists students throughout the year with financial aid and related issues, including financial aid applications and exit interview counseling. Financial guidance will be provided during mandatory student orientation to discuss loan allocation amounts and to give insight on debt accumulation while in professional school. Financial and budgetary topics will be included within the curriculum, such as clinical and professional skills and practice management courses. Private sector participation will be included to advance financial literacy and financial planning of students.
Student Clubs and Organizations
Student clubs and organizations will be supported and facilitated by the office of the ADPP. There will be both student organizations and monitored company representatives that provide extra support to the students within their areas of interest.
Community Outreach
While enrolled at LCSVM, students will be encouraged to be active within the local community. Service activities will be a part of student organizations. Examples include volunteerism at local animal shelters, assistance with rabies clinics, community educational events, cattlemen’s conferences, open houses for the public, and local public schools.
